Dan Petroski founded Massican to prove that Italian white varieties belong in Napa, and his Pinot Grigio has become the bottle that converts skeptics. Sourced from cool sites in Sonoma and Lodi (the label reads simply ‘California’), it’s fermented in neutral oak and large foudre with a deliberately gentle hand no flash, no flab, just zippy fruit and stony bite. The blend is mostly Pinot Grigio with a small splash of Cortese for lift. This is what Pinot Grigio ought to taste like: cool, lemony, herbal, and razor-sharp on the finish. Since Duckhorn acquired Massican in 2022, Petroski has stayed in the cellar, and this remains one of California’s smartest summer whites.
