From the Speyside distillery it’s named for, Tomintoul 25 Year Old is a single malt Scotch matured a quarter century in ex-bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks. The house built its name on a soft, approachable style, ‘the gentle dram,’ and twenty-five years deepen that without hardening it: dried fig, toffee, orchard honey, and warm baking spice, finishing long and smooth at 43%. This is not a peated Islay bruiser; it’s an after-dinner Speyside that stays civil neat and never really needs water. Serve it in a copita at room temperature, ideally alongside conversation rather than a meal. A good bottle for someone easing into aged single malt, and a fair one for those already deep in it.
