Bunnahabhain rarely appears at forty years old, which is what sets Rare Hare Bunnahabhain 40 Year apart, an Islay single malt Scotch drawn from four decades in sherry casks. The distillery sits apart from its Islay neighbors: largely unpeated, coastal rather than smoky. Forty years of slow sherry maturation push it deep into dried fruit, creamy toffee, toasted nut, and soft oak, with faint sea salt underneath. Bottlings of this age are made in tiny numbers and move quickly. There is nothing to mix here, so pour a small measure neat, no water, and give it room to open across an evening. A collector’s Scotch, and a milestone pour for a serious Islay drinker.
