Highland Park 40 Year Old, Spring 2019 Release, began in five refill casks laid down before 1979, then moved in 2008 to first-fill sherry-seasoned American oak for a final decade of maturation. That two-stage aging is the whole story: forty years of slow, gentle development from the refill casks, then real sherry-cask depth layered on in the last ten. Bottled at 43.2% ABV, this is Highland Park at its most expensive to make and hardest to repeat five casks, one release. A whisky for a collection, not a regular pour. Neat, in a proper glass, with real time to open.
