Willett Family Estate Small Batch Rye pours as a cask-strength Kentucky straight rye four years old, bottled by Willett Distillery in Bardstown and married from two different rye mash bills, one heavy on rye and one closer to a barely-legal recipe, to land between fruit and spice in the old Maryland style. Because it goes in the bottle at full barrel strength, proof shifts batch to batch; this one lands at 104.4. Expect a big, oily pour: caramel and dark fruit up front, then a wave of black pepper, clove and toasted oak that a splash of water opens right up. Young but muscular, it rewards a rye drinker who likes the spice turned all the way up neat, or over a single large cube.
