Lieser Niederberg Helden is Schloss Lieser’s home vineyard the steep blue-slate slope right below the castle, and the heart of the six neglected hectares Thomas Haag inherited when he arrived in 1992. Sptlese here means fruit picked late, fermented slowly with wild yeast, and left with real sweetness that the Mosel’s acidity slices straight through. 2021 was a cool, classical vintage on the river, the kind long-time Mosel drinkers wait years for: low alcohol, high tension, nothing excessive. Four years in bottle have begun to knit it together, and it has decades still in front of it. Chill it hard, pour it with something spicy, or simply drink it on its own on a warm afternoon.
