Grown on a Demeter-certified biodynamic estate in the hills of Rutherford, Quintessa is a proprietary Napa Valley red blend and the wine that put this single vineyard on the map. The 2019 vintage draws on all five Bordeaux grapes Cabernet Sauvignon leads, with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Carmenere filling out the frame. It pours dense and dark: cassis and blackberry, a thread of licorice, dried flowers and the mineral, earthy edge Rutherford is known for. Fine-grained tannins and bright acidity keep it lifted through a long finish. Powerful now but built to cellar decant it for a steak dinner tonight, or lay it down for a decade.
