Napa Valley has one red blend the whole world benchmarks against, and Opus One 2019 is it the estate founded by Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild at full stride. Cabernet Sauvignon leads at 78 percent, rounded out with Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec, then aged nineteen months in new French oak. The winery’s own notes call out black plum, blueberry, and black currant over dried rose petals, with a satiny texture that carries savory herbs, espresso, and cocoa to a finish edged in dark chocolate. The wine drinks beautifully now with an hour in a decanter, and it has the structure to hold in the cellar for two decades. A bottle for the big table serve it with a proper steak.
