Francis Ford Coppola bought the original Niebaum estate the historic Inglenook property in Rutherford in 1975, but he wouldn’t be able to reclaim the Inglenook name itself until 2011. In the meantime, the estate’s Cabernets bore the Niebaum-Coppola label. 1998 was a cooler, more challenging Napa vintage, and rather than release Rubicon that year, the estate bottled its 100% Cabernet under the Cask Cabernet designation a wink to the great mid-century Inglenook Cask bottlings. A mature Napa Cab from a working filmmaker’s most personal project and one of the valley’s most storied addresses.
