Mount Eden’s Estate Pinot Noir is one of the most historically important Pinots in America. Martin Ray planted Pinot Noir on this Santa Cruz mountaintop in 1945, with budwood traced through Paul Masson back to the great Burgundy houses possibly Domaine Louis Latour itself and brought to California in the 1880s. Today seven acres of those low-yielding vines deliver one to one-and-a-half tons per acre. Above the fog line at 2,000 feet, planted in Franciscan shale, the vineyard makes a Pinot that has more in common with Cte de Nuits than with the cool-coastal Pinots dominating California right now: structured, savory, built to age a decade or more.
