Glenfiddich 40 Year Old is the pinnacle of the Speyside distillery’s rare whisky program, a single malt Scotch built through remnant vatting each new batch is married with what remains of the previous one, so a thread of every earlier release runs through the bottle in your hand. The malt master draws casks at least four decades old from among the oldest in the warehouses, and fewer than 1,000 individually numbered, leather-wrapped bottles are released each year. The nose layers dried fruits, dark chocolate, roasted coffee and ripe black cherry over wood smoke and leather; the palate is silky with fruitcake, dates and drying oak; the finish simply refuses to quit. A whisky for decanting slowly, neat, on the nights that count.
