Located in the heart of the Saint-Estphe appellation, Chteau Tronquoy takes its name from Franois Tronquoy, who first established the estate in the 18th century. The property remained in the Tronquoy family until 1968, before later being managed by Jean Texier and his wife Arlette Castja-Texier.

In 2006, Martin and Olivier Bouygues, owners of Chteau Montrose, acquired theestate and launched major investments in both the vineyard and winery, elevating thequality and precision of the wines. The 2019 vintage marked an important transition forthe chteau, as the estate officially shortened its historic name from Chteau Tronquoy-Lalande to simply Chteau Tronquoy. Chteau Tronquoy is situated on one of thehighest points of Saint-Estphe, with vineyards planted on deep gravel and clay soilsideally suited to the production of structured, age-worthy wines. Benefiting from thesame technical expertise and philosophy as Chteau Montrose, the estate has becomeincreasingly recognized for producing wines that combine the power and depth typicalof Saint-Estphe with a more refined and polished style.

The 2019 vintage offers a particularly compelling expression of the estate, showinglayers of dark fruit, graphite, spice, and fresh minerality supported by refined tanninsand excellent balance.

As I wrote earlier this year, the 2019 Tronquoy-Lalande has turned out beautifully, and it continues to show very well, offering up inviting aromas of wild berries, spices, rose petals and cassis. Medium to full-bodied, layered, and sensual, with lively acids, ripe tannins, and a long, vibrant finish, it’s reminiscent of a somewhat more sun-kissed and extroverted sibling of the terrific 2016 at this address.

This is really complex and perfumed, with an extremely attractive bouquet of flowersand dark fruit, such as currants. Full-bodied with crushed stones and chewy tannins, yettheres polish and sophistication to it. Serious bottle here. Try after 2025.

94 Points,James Suckling
