Smith Haut Lafitte is a Pessac-Lognan classified-growth estate, owned since 1990 by Daniel and Florence Cathiard, who farm with a meticulous “bio-precision” approach on a famous gravel ridge near Chteau Haut-Bailly. The 2014 is a charming, well-balanced vintage here: Cabernet Sauvignon-led (around 60%) with Merlot, a touch of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Now more than a decade on, it’s entering a lovely drinking window while keeping plenty in reserve. Classic left-bank Graves character, polished but not overdone. Decant an hour before serving.
