Chartreuse Green Liqueur has been made by Carthusian monks in the French Alps since 1764, from a secret recipe of 130 plants that only two monks at a time are permitted to know in full. Bottled at 110 proof, the liqueur is naturally green no coloring, just the plants and it drinks intense: herbaceous and honeyed up front, then pine, mint, anise, and a long peppery warmth. The monks cap production to protect their contemplative life, so bottles are genuinely allocated in the US.
