Calabria is Italy’s wild, sun-baked toe, and Ciro is its most famous wine, poured (legend says) for victorious athletes at the ancient Olympics. This one comes from Caparra & Siciliani, two farming families who threw their vineyards together back in 1963 near the Ionian coast. It’s 100% Gaglioppo, Calabria’s signature red grape, grown on gentle hills between the mountains and the sea. Expect something rustic in the best way: sour-cherry fruit, dried herbs, baked earth and the grape’s trademark dusty tannins, all lifted by bright acidity. Serious character in a very friendly wine.
