Call it baby Barolo from a volcano. Calabretta is a cult Etna traditionalist working old, often ungrafted vines on the mountain’s north slope, and Cala Cala is his everyday red: a non-vintage, lot-numbered blend (this is Lot 30) of Nerello Mascalese with a splash of Nerello Cappuccio. Here’s the trick it’s built largely from declassified Etna Rosso and given long aging in big old casks, so you get an unusually mature, savory, Nebbiolo-like wine for house-pour money. Rose, sour cherry, and a whiff of volcanic iron. Serious wine dressed down for a weeknight.
