Vigna del Nocio means “vineyard of the walnut tree,” named for the old noce that has long stood among the vines at Boscarelli’s Cervognano estate. It is the crown jewel of one of Montepulciano’s quietly great families: a four-hectare single-vineyard parcel of Prugnolo Gentile (the local Sangiovese) acquired in 1988, planted in a mosaic of sand and clay at around 300 meters elevation. Bottled only in top vintages, this single-vineyard Vino Nobile sees 18-24 months in a mix of small and large French and Slavonian oak casks, and arrives with the depth and pedigree people associate with the very best Brunellos, but with Vino Nobile’s own savory, herbal cast. A serious, ageworthy expression of central Tuscany.
