Proof that Garnacha can whisper instead of shout. Bernabeleva farms old vines high in the Sierra de Gredos west of Madrid, where decomposed granite and cool elevation give this grape an unexpected grace. Arroyo del Tortolas comes from a single north-facing parcel of 65-plus-year-old vines around 800 meters up, worked organically and biodynamically by hand. Whole-cluster fermentation with native yeasts and aging in seasoned French oak yield a red that leans toward the Pinot Noir side of Garnacha: perfumed, red-fruited, and elegant rather than heavy. Production is tiny, so grab it while you can.
