Vino Nobile di Montepulciano was prized by popes and nobles for centuries before Brunello made the region famous, and today it’s one of Tuscany’s quietest bargains. Avignonesi farms one of Italy’s largest biodynamic and regenerative estates, entirely certified organic and made only from estate fruit. This is Sangiovese (called Prugnolo Gentile here) grown with real conviction and priced like an everyday bottle. Belgian owner Virginie Saverys converted the whole property to organic and biodynamic farming after taking over in 2009. Medium-bodied, earthy, and lifted by Sangiovese’s signature violet and cherry, it drinks well above its station.
