Watson Ranch sits on a steep hillside on the southern edge of Napa, overlooking San Pablo Bay, with cool winds off the water and unusual calcareous-clay-over-limestone soils that are exceedingly rare on the North Coast. The Cabernet Franc is a Loire-clone block grafted in 2014 alongside the Chardonnay – barely an acre, just a handful of barrels a year. The result is the opposite of typical Napa Cab Franc: airy, chalky, and lifted, with herbal lift and bright red fruit rather than weight.
